Robin: Hey…..Shorty… Is that you?
Lizzie: Hi Robin. You mean you don’t even recognize me?
Robin: (chuckles) Come on, Lizzie--you know I’m just teasin. You look great!
Lizzie: Thanks. But why haven’t you called me? Did Lulu tell you I called last week?
Robin: She did, she did. But uh…..we were in Japan and had all kinds of studies and well…..
Lizzie: But you have time to call Cassie.
Robin: (sighs) You’re right. I‘m sorry, Lizzie. I should have returned your call by now. But I meant to---honest I did.
(SILENCE)
Robin: Hey Shorty--you do forgive me, don’t you?
Lizzie: Robin, I really needed to talk to you! I thought you’d be there for me!
Robin: Lizzie…..I had no idea it was that serious. Believe me when I tell you I’m really sorry I didn’t call you. I would never leave you hangin on purpose like that, Lizzie. Now tell me what’s up. What’s goin on?
Lizzie: (sigh) My mom call’s it dream analysis 101.
Robin: Uh…..sorry, Shorty but that went WAY over my head. Come again?
Lizzie: I’ve been having dreams about Johnny..
Robin: Oh, I see…..
Lizzie: So, that’s it? I see?
Robin: Well Shorty, I mean it’s not so unusual for you to dream about Johnny. You two were close and he was taken away so sudden like. I’d say it’s pretty normal if you ask me.
Lizzie: But they happen all the time. Practically every time I close my eyes!
Robin: Now that’s a bit much.
Lizzie: I’ll say! It got to the point where I got out of bed one night and watched TV instead of sleeping cuz I was afraid of what I might see next!
Robin: Are they scary dreams?
Lizzie: No. Just strange. And so REAL, Robin. Like the first one--Johnny walked into the Rev while I was doing my homework and gave me the exact same flower pot he gave me when he was alive. I didn’t want it because I thought I might break it like I did the first one, but he said I wouldn’t. He put it in my hands, and he was right--I didn’t break it.
Robin: Sounds like your mind wanted to re-write what happened and make it all better.
Lizzie: I knew you’d understand! That’s EXACTLY what Mom said! That’s why she called it dream analysis 101.
Robin: Oh okay…..now I get that. So how many dreams of Johnny have you had?
Lizzie: Like I said, every time I close my eyes it seems. Like at school one day I had a free period so I was sitting outside under a tree and all of a sudden Johnny and I were riding a Merry Go Round and I was telling him how life sucks and high school sucks and he understood completely. He said he liked being with me on the Merry Go Round and he offered to go anywhere with me that I wanted.
Robin: Hmmm…not too sure what that one means. What happened next?
Lizzie: Well that’s when Andrew showed up and interrupted the dream.
Robin: Is that the new guy?
Lizzie: Uh huh.
Robin: You didn’t tell him about these dreams did you?
Lizzie: No way! Well at least not exactly. I told him that a former friend of mine came back into my life but he figured out I was talking about a guy.
Robin: How did he react to that?
Lizzie: He handled it well, but of course he told me I should move on.
Robin: Sounds like a pretty cool dude so far. I think I’m gonna like Andrew.
Lizzie: (giggles) He’s sweet--to me he’s got a personality a lot like Johnny..
Robin: Okaaaaaaay….but remember, Shorty, he’s NOT Johnny. Don’t make the mistake of expecting him to be just like Johnny.
Lizzie: I know. I sorta made that mistake with Devin at first. Always comparing him to Johnny.
Robin: How is my old roomie, Devin?
Lizzie: Okay I guess. He’s all into Kendra these days.
Robin: I never got to know Kendra very well but she seemed nice. Pretty girl from what I remember…..
Lizzie: (clears throat) Earth to Robin…….
Robin: Oh! Sorry, Lizzie. Yeah, like I was saying, don’t expect Andrew to be a carbon copy of Johnny.
Lizzie: Well, he doesn’t LOOK anything like Johnny so at least that’s not a problem!
Robin: That’ good. How else are they different?
Lizzie: Andrew dances really well. Johnny and I never got a chance to……
Robin: You’ve been dancing with Andrew already?
Lizzie: Yeah. We went to a Teen Dance at the Outreach Center where we both work. And that’s when I had another dream too.
Robin: Word? Another Carousel ride?
Lizzie: No. I said Johnny and I never got a chance to dance, but we did---in my dream. We slow danced to our song and he said he was having the time of his after life.
Robin: Wow. This is really deep. Remind me to tell you something before we hang up.
Lizzie: Oh, okay.
Robin: How did this dream end?
Lizzie: I told him I needed him to leave but I wanted him to stay. He almost kissed me but I woke up.
Robin: How’d you feel when you woke up?
Lizzie: Disturbed. Thank God Nate Ray wrote to me about Johnny. I had his letter by my bedside and read it and it made me feel better.
Robin: What did Nate say about Johnny?
Lizzie: He said life is what it is and you cant predict the future. Be grateful for every day and be there for the people you love.
Robin: That’s good advice.
Lizzie: I guess. But I really wish I had a chance to speak with you at that moment. You would have given me BETTER advice.
Robin: Thanks, Shorty…….but don’t put me on a pedestal. I’m only human. Nate’s words were very wise.
Lizzie: Anyway, my Dad came in and had a talk with me.
Robin: Leave it to Mr. Sutton--perfect timing, huh?
Lizzie: No doubt. He told me even tho the dreams weren’t real my feelings were real. He said that it was Johnny that needed to leave but it was me that needed to let Johnny go.
Robin: And when you’re ready, Shorty, you will.
Lizzie: What did you say?
Robin: I said when you’re ready you’ll let Johnny go.
Lizzie: That’s JUST what my Dad said, Robin!
Robin: (chuckles) Great minds think alike--what can I say? But I’m still only human--just like your Dad.
Lizzie: Aite….if you insist!
Robin: So don’t rush things, Lizzie. When you’re ready, you’ll know.
Lizzie: Oh, I said goodbye to Johnny.
Robin: You did? So soon?
Lizzie: It was time, Robin. I went to his grave. He didn’t want me to send him away, but I did on one condition.
Robin: Which was?
Lizzie: I promised I’d never ever forget him.
Robin: I know you never will.
Lizzie: He was my first love and he’ll live in my heart forever.
(SILENCE)
Lizzie: Robin, are you CRYING???
Robin: (wiping his eyes) NO WAY, SHORTY! You know I’ve got allergies!
Lizzie: Yeah………right.
Robin: I do, Lizzie!\
Lizzie: Alright, alright, I believe you!
Robin: So back to Johnny. No more dreams?
Lizzie: No more.
Robin: And does Andrew know you’ve moved on?
Lizzie: I made that VERY clear.
Robin: Is that so? And how did you do that young lady?
Lizzie: Some things are better left unsaid.
Robin: Excuse you? First you rag on me for not calling you back and now you’re withholding information?
Lizzie: (giggles)
Robin: (shaking his head) Ain’t that just like a girl……
Lizzie: ROBIN!!!! I can’t tell you EVERYTHING. Some things are---well--private….
Robin: I get it, I get it. He kissed you, didn’t he?
Lizzie: (giggles)
Robin: You’d better not get pregnant, Lizzie Sutton.
Lizzie: ROBIN!!!
Robin: (laughing) Well? You wanted my advice---so you got it!
Lizzie: Gee, THANKS A LOT!
Robin: Shorty, I have no doubt that you’re gonna be just fine. Now that you’ve said goodbye to Mr. Nightingale, you’re free to live your life with no regrets.
Lizzie: I hope so.
(SILENCE)
Robin: Well, I think we’ve said enough for today, don’t you?
Lizzie: It was nice talking to you Robin. Before you go, you said you had something to tell me.
Robin: Oh yeah, thanks for reminding me. Remember you said Johnny said he was having the time of his afterlife?
Lizzie: Yes?
Robin: Well, I had a conversation with someone like that too.
Lizzie: Your Dad?
Robin: NO!!!
Lizzie: Okay, okay--it was just a guess!
Robin: Sorry, I didn’t mean to yell at you Shorty..
Lizzie: You scared me!
Robin: See? I told you I’m only human….
Lizzie: Tell me who you’re talking about?
Robin: Johnny.
Lizzie: WHAT????
Robin: Yeah. It was when I was in my coma. He came to me and showed me everyone’s life and why I should fight to live. He helped me come out of my coma.
Lizzie: (crying) Are you telling the truth, Robin?
Robin: Lizzie, I would NEVER make up something like that as a joke. I’m dead serious.
Lizzie: Did you have to say DEAD?
Robin: Sorry. I’m serious. Johnny is my guardian angel.
Lizzie: But what about me?
Robin He’s probably yours too.
Lizzie: I don’t think so. I made him go away…..
Robin: Don’t worry about it, Lizzie. Just be happy that he’s okay.
Lizzie: (sigh) You’re right.
Robin: You sure you’re okay?
Lizzie: Yeah I’m okay. Thanks Robin.
Robin: No, thank YOU Lizzie. You shared your dreams with me even though I let you down.
Lizzie: You didn’t let me down--not really. But next time when I leave you a message, please return it on a timely basis.
Robin: That’s it--I’m getting off now. You’re TOO grown for me. Timely basis!!! PUH-LEEZE!!
Lizzie: (giggles) Bye Robin!
Robin: Later, Shorty.
(hangs up)
